My summer placement re-cap: Hannah Whalley

Over the summer between 2nd and 3rd year, Solent PR students carried out 2 work placements to gain much needed industry experience. Whilst some students knew what sector they want to work in after graudating, some took these placements as the time to work out which sector appeals to them most. In this post, I speak to Hannah Whalley about her experiences…

“I organised two very different work experience placements this summer. My first placement was for a small charity in Southampton and the other was for a small marketing and public relations agency in Essex.

For my first placement I felt that working for a charity that I had worked with before on a university assignment was very beneficial, as I already knew everything about the history of the charity and its plans for the future. I found that this helped me get ahead with ideas, research and implementation.

I thoroughly enjoyed this placement by utilising my PR skills to help and I would definitely consider working in-house for a charity that I would like to help in the future. From our work over the summer, the charity is now putting on multiple concerts in Southampton with stars from BBC talent show, The Voice UK!

I also thoroughly enjoyed my second placement at the agency as I felt that I really got to understand agency PR and got a feel for the office environment, which is the direction I intend to head in after I graduate. The agency is a very small one with five employees and a director, I enjoyed this office environment as everyone was really close and friendly, to which I fitted straight in.

The agency has a range of clients from varied sectors and I found that clients that specialised in something that I lacked interest in were more difficult to work with than ones that were of interest to me, as I had a lot more motivation and ideas for them. This placement made me realise how important it is for me to work in a sector with clients that specialise in an industry that I am interested in, such as the entertainment sector. I’ll be looking for experience in entertainment next!”

Thank you, Hannah! If you have any questions about the Solent PR course and how we believe industry experience is key to post-grad employment, leave a comment and we’ll be in touch! 🙂
